Facial Tonic, Toners, Lotions, Hydrolats

In most cases, using cosmetics to cleanse the skin, and sometimes rinsing with water, disrupts the pH balance and creates an alkaline environment. If the lipid barrier is not restored after washing, the skin rapidly begins to lose moisture.

As a result, dry and normal skin begins to peel, crack, and feel tight, while oily or combination skin begins to produce more sebum as a protective measure. In both cases, this is a sign of lack of hydration, which leads to inflammation, irritation, and the appearance of premature wrinkles.

Hydrolates, the name suggests “hydro”, is a secondary product obtained from the distillation of herbs, flowers and plant raw materials. We also call them floral waters. They are mainly in the form of a spray, but can be used with a dispenser, for application with a swab or with the palms. The water has its own aroma and taste. Natural care from a distillate, but also a solution of essential oils with a therapeutic context, is created as a result of the concentration of the maximum amount of active ingredient. It acts as a refreshing and soothing water for the skin through the effect of a specific herb.

Toners are gaining popularity in the Asian skin care routine. A rich substance enriched with valuable active ingredients, plant extracts, water-soluble oils, ceramides, amino acids, and hyaluronic acid. Their consistency is a bit thicker than hydrolates. They can even be gel- or oil-based. They are primarily applied with hands and finger taps. The richness of the components ensures not only instant hydration, but also penetrates deeper levels of the skin.

Facial tonic has a thinner consistency, more like a hydrolate. It belongs to the European way of skin care. Due to its composition, which sometimes includes alcohol or active extracts in an alcoholic solution, it is used mainly as the final stage of skin cleansing. Toners normalize the pH, soothe and remove residues of cosmetics, external environmental pollutants. Tonic is often confused with lotion, again an alcohol-based wash-off product. Lotions, however, are in most cases a light emulsion or a combination of water with oils. Due to their water base, they are again in the sequence of moisturizing products.
